I would say, if you're able to, change the way your coop works: build a smaller hut for the chickens, with sleeping spots and the hay stockpile, and give them a 'wander area' ~20x20 centered on the barn. you can then set a secondary area just inside the barn, so if your map can get cold your chickens won't freeze to death and it's easier to heat..
